Money — Earn it! Spend it! Lose it! Imagine having made significant financial gains generated by a lifetime of hard work and smart financial planning all to be lost to a gambling addiction. Caught in the Web of the Spider tells of a German woman growing up during the Nazi era and, just as Germany falls to ruin as a result of World War II, her own life also falls victim to the Roulette tables, ending in disaster.

The two sisters Hanni and Mari grow up in Germany. During the Hitler regime, they endure the hardships of World War II. Later, while the adult Hanni emigrates to Canada and later settles in the USA, Mari is twice married. Mari establishes a carpet business, eventually has two children and later takes on the task of nursing her mother and her disabled husband. Feeling the crush of the situation, she winds up in a casino one night and soon falls into a circle of addiction, gambling away her and her husband’s assets and finally starts embezzling money from her cousin. For years, Mari keeps her addiction a secret, consequently losing all touch with friends, relatives, and reality. At the age of sixty-six, she is active and dynamic—and on the verge of a total breakdown.

The author, Mareen Mathis, tells of her very own story in this compelling book, giving an honest assessment of her flawed ways which were fueled by an obsessive compulsion which increasingly overcame her to stealthily engage in gambling. The text was originally written as a therapeutic assignment given by Mathis’ psychiatrist then translated from German into English.

Caught in the Web of the Spider has all the elements for a truly great read!

Mareen Mathis was born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1934 and raised during the Hitler dictatorship. After enduring many of the common hardships brought on by World War II, she eventually terminated her secondary education and entered into clerical training. Later, she successfully ran her own carpet business for twenty years. She was twice married, had two children, and four grandchildren. After the death of her second husband, she had the time to actively pursue her affection for writing. Caught in the Web of the Spider is her first book.
